In Alaska we are accustomed to living side by side with wild creatures. The diversity of wildlife and the opportunity to ‘meet the locals’ is one of the draws of living up here. On occasion, however, our neighbors get a little too close for comfort.
One such incident occurred in April of 2023 when a young bull moose made his way into the Providence Medical Center in Anchorage. The sensors on the automatic doors opened easily for the bull and he casually sauntered right in. Winter is a long hard season up here in the North, and the moose was drawn in by the tasty looking potted greenery on display in the lobby. Who can blame him? It looked like moose-y fast food!
Happily, witnesses to the event had enough moose know-how to asses the situation and deftly keep staff and the moose calm and happy. Our own Lily Grbavach, Director of Education was recently interviewed on the Something Offbeat podcast to deliver her own thoughts on the tale as well as offer some insight on moose behavior.
