Migratory birds have returned to the sanctuary! Make sure to bring your binoculars the next time you visit us!

This time of year is always exciting for us here in Portage; it feels like getting to say hello to friends we haven’t seen in a while. These birds make incredible pilgrimages across the globe, returning to Alaska every summer to breed and relax.

A particular favorite of both staff and guests alike are the Rufous Hummingbirds. These little marvels travel all the way from Mexico to Alaska each summer. While here in Alaska they breed and lay their eggs. Those eggs are raised in as little as 19 days!

We will be hosting some exciting events at the sanctuary in honor of these amazing creatures! May 31st we are partnering with Alpenglow Coffee in Girdwood to host a Hummingbird Trivia Night! This event will also feature a banding demonstration provided weather (and birds!) cooperate. June 1st  marks the return of our yearly Hummingbird celebration! Join us for educational events, family activities, and hummingbird banding demonstrations! Hummingbird Days 2024!
