This week, AWCC celebrated Wolf Awareness Week! This annual event helps educate the public about wolves and the important role they play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Here in Alaska, wolves are a vital part of the landscape and have never been listed as an endangered or extinct species—making our state unique in its long-standing connection with these apex predators. Wolves help keep prey populations in balance, which in turn supports the overall health of Alaska’s wild habitats. Unfortunately, that’s not the case everywhere. In many parts of the Lower 48, wolf populations have faced significant declines due to habitat loss, conflict with humans, and historical persecution. This is why it’s so important to highlight conservation efforts focused on understanding and protecting this remarkable species.
At AWCC, we’re proud to provide a home for wolves that cannot survive in the wild while using their stories to inspire understanding and respect for their species. Through education and outreach, we aim to dispel myths, foster appreciation, and support conservation efforts that ensure wolves continue to thrive across Alaska and beyond.
To celebrate and spread awareness, we created a special Q&A video featuring our Assistant Animal Curator, Alex Lewis. Before joining AWCC, Alex spent five years working as a wolf biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Southeast Alaska. Check out the video below to hear her insights and some of her incredible experiences working with these fascinating animals!
Head over to our Facebook page to catch the live video! Alex shares all about AWCC’s wolves, and you won’t want to miss when they get their big bones: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1BTJeJtd2X/
