Winters at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center are filled with unique wonders, mostly snow and frosty temps, but there are other things that are generally seen as more desirable too!

As we drift through the fall season and into the winter ahead, we welcome some of the natural phenomena that occurs during the darker months: the Aurora Borealis (also known as the Northern Lights). In mid August, staff members living on property were delighted by a beautiful and surprisingly strong geomagnetic storm, rated by scientists as a KP index of 7, during the few hours of darkness at that time of year. Luckily, as winter returns, and dark skies along with it, the opportunity to view these beautiful light shows will only grow. Located just along the Turnagain Arm in the Portage Valley, seeing these lights from AWCC is unlike anything else.

We know it may be chilly and the bears may be resting, but come experience this phenomenon in person with us as we celebrate the coming of winter!
