The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center has had an incredible year of growth in 2024, furthering its mission to preserve Alaska’s wildlife through education, research, conservation, and high-quality animal care.

As we reflect on this year, we’re excited to share some of the remarkable achievements in our education programs and conservation efforts.

“We evaluate program impact annually. We use our data and experience to shape our educational programs into the most effective mission driving experiences they can be.”

Lily Grbavach, Director of Education

Here are the highlights from 2024, showcasing our progress compared to 2023:

Significant Growth in Commercial Tours and Animal Encounters:

    • 49% increase in total engagement for our tours and animal encounters, including popular programs like the Walk on the Wild Side Tour, Walking Tour, Bear Encounters, and Moose Encounters. This surge in participation reflects growing interest in our interactive and educational experiences, bringing more guests face-to-face with Alaska’s wildlife.

Expanded Beluga Monitoring Efforts:

    • Our beluga whale monitoring efforts saw a 44% increase in 2024. In 2023, we conducted 98 monitoring sessions, while this year, we expanded to 139 sessions. This growth in monitoring hours is a testament to our commitment to protecting and learning more about the endangered Cook Inlet belugas.
    • Additionally, we’re excited to have formed a new partnership with the Cook Inlet Beluga Whale Photo ID Project, enhancing our research and conservation work on these incredible creatures.

Record-Breaking Engagement in Educational Events:

    • In 2024, we reached 84% more guests through our educational events, such as Belugas Count, Hummingbird Days, and Bison Day. These events are central to our mission of educating the public about Alaska’s wildlife, and the increase in participation demonstrates the growing interest and importance of these programs.

Increased Volunteer Hours:

    • In 2024, volunteer hours increased by 12%. We sincerely appreciate the continued dedication of our volunteers, whose efforts are essential in keeping everything running smoothly. None of this would be possible without their invaluable support!

These successes are a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our team, and we’re proud to have made such a significant impact on wildlife conservation and public education this year. While 2024 isn’t finished yet, it’s clear that our efforts are resonating with the community, and we’re excited to continue building on this momentum. Thank you to all of our donors, visitors, and supporters for helping to make this year such a great success!
