Meet the Cool Cats of AWCC!
Happy National Cat Day! On this special day, it is only right to shine the spotlight on our two resident furry felines, Chena and Calvin.
Chena was brought to AWCC after being rescued from North Pole, Alaska. Chena was raised in a small chicken coop, and she unfortunately developed physical handicaps that prevent her from being able to return to the wild. Since being at AWCC, she has become a hidden gem of the sanctuary. Given her shy demeanor, those who are lucky enough to see her are surely appreciative of her beautiful markings. Chena’s favorite food is chicken, though she will never turn down a hare!
Calvin was rescued as a six pound kitten from Bethel, Alaska after his mother was killed. Calvin’s most notable feature is his feisty personality. He can often be seen perching in his habitat, taking a long cat nap, or playing with the enrichment our animal care team provides.
Canada Lynx are most known for their black tipped ears and large, snowshoe-like paws. They are excellent hunters and have adaptations that allow them to hunt at night. As carnivores, their main source of food are snow hares, however, they also prey on small mammals and birds. Canada Lynx are territorial animals and live alone most of the time. In addition to Alaska, they can be found in Canada and parts of the US with dense, Boreal forests.
