Christmas Bird Count at AWCC

December 22, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is excited to sponsor the Portage Circle of the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count!

The Christmas Bird Count started in 1900, making it one of the longest-running community science projects in the world. From December 14 through January 5 each year tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas brave snow, wind, or rain, and take part in the effort. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this long-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action. And this isn’t just about the data, though the science is incredibly important. It’s about community, connection to nature, and the simple joy of watching birds.

There will be free birding program at AWCC from 12:00pm-1:00pm for visitors on the day of the Portage Count to bring awareness to this community science project and Alaska’s birds.

Calling all birders!

Please join us for the Portage Christmas Bird Count. This year’s count will take place on Monday, December 22. On count day, we’ll head out in small field teams to identify and count as many birds and species as possible within our circle. Everyone is welcome–new and experienced birders alike! We will meet at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (43520 Seward Highway, Girdwood, AK 99587) in Bison Hall between 9:30am and 10:00am for section assignments and refreshments. We will meet back at this location at 4:00pm for the group tallies and review the total number counts.

To volunteer as a participant, please email amy@alaskawildlife.org by Wednesday, December 17 and Amy will reply with more details.
